Premarital Counseling and Couples Therapy

"Great marriages aren’t about clear communication – they’re about small moments of attachment and intimacy." Dr. John Gottman

There is no perfect marriage! Instead, there are complex and evolving relationships with ups and downs that form when two people meet and begin their own family.  Each person brings their own experiences, pain, trauma, patterns, and baggage into the relationship, and often times this can present some difficulties. It is important to know that this is normal and some conflicts can be expected and with the right tools they can be weathered. It is my goal to work alongside each couple to provide them the skills they need to have a marriage that can withstand the test of time and overcome the trials and tribulations of life.

For couples who have been together and seem to have lost each other along their path, I come along to help facilitate a rekindling of connection. I work with couples to help them find the love they thought was lost and rebuild the connection they desire. Using a combination of the Gottman Approach, Emotional Focused Therapy, and Prepare and Enrich I meet couples where they are and provide a space of healing without judgment.

Trauma-Focused Therapy

“You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.” -Maya Angelou

When you experience trauma it happens on multiple levels. It has a way of disconnecting the different parts of you and rewiring your brain. Often times we have no idea how deeply our trauma has impacted us until our body seems to react on its own to certain events. For some, this is pronounced and can be diagnosed as PTSD easily. For others, it is a more subtle pain and disconnect right below the surface of who they are impacting relationships, work performance, and overall quality of life. Complex trauma, multiple exposures to traumatic events sometimes reaching back to childhood, can change how we see the world around us, and our ability to accept love from anyone, even ourselves. The journey to healing from trauma can be a challenging road but it is doable with therapy. I have been trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Internal Family Systems for the treatment of trauma. I use these approaches to aid clients in building the skills they need to cope while also taking the time to look inward and heal the different parts of themselves and feel connected again. You have already taken the first steps to heal by being here now. I can’t guarantee that it will be an easy journey but if you are ready to move forward and do the work than I can guarantee that I will be here with you every step of the way. Depression

"You are not your illness. You have an individual story to tell. You have a name, a history, a personality. Staying yourself is part of the battle."-Julian Seifter

Have you been struggling with getting out of bed some mornings? Do you feel both physically and emotionally drained? Are you using unhealthy coping skills to deal with the heaviness that you feel on a daily basis? Maybe you have realized that the things you once enjoyed don’t seem to make you happy any longer. If this is you then you may be struggling with depression. Depression can be either situational, the loss of a loved one or a job, or it can be severe with long-lasting effects and no clear reason to you. It can also be your body and soul’s way of trying to communicate to you that something isn’t right. Therapy is a process that will allow you to work through those feelings, identify the contributing factors, and begin the process of gaining your life back! Depression does not have to be fixed through medication alone. In fact, it is best treated with therapy unless there is an underlying medical condition. In those instances, therapy in combination with medication is the recommended form of treatment for therapy. I have been training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Narrative Therapy to aid in this process and empower clients to take charge of their emotions. If you are ready to embark on this journey and change the narrative please click the link below to schedule your consultation.

Sexuality

“Sex is as much about opening yourself and showing your sexuality to another human being as it is about allowing them to show you theirs.”

One of the most amazing and earth shattering experiences any human being can have is to become one with their own sexuality. Unfortunately, this experience can be tainted by past experiences, trauma, self-esteem, and a lack of emotional connection between lovers. Therapy surrounding sexuality can work to improve the “sex-esteem” of individuals and allow them to tap into the sexual part of themselves. In individual therapy I will work to aid you in regaining the power of your sexual energy as your own and allowing yourself to truly enjoy that side of you without shame or guilt. For couples seeking therapy to relight their fire and once again find connection through sexual intimacy we work first towards connecting on an emotional level and rebuilding the bridge to sexual fulfillment.
